Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public later this week.
